April 15 & 27th | 6:30-9pm PST | Virtual class

Learn the process of transforming raw fish skins into a beautiful, durable textile that can be used to make clothing, pouches, wallets, footwear, art and anything you would use leather for.

In this two part class, we will explore tanning with tannins and fat using things you will find around your home. You will learn everything you need to know to have your own Home Tannery! Work alongside amazing instructor Janey Chang (FB + IG @janeychangart), an artist and educator with a passion for reviving the almost forgotten skill of making fish leather and a small group of the Salmon Sisters community. All are welcome - no experience required! Class size limited to 20. See details for more info on class & supplies needed.

This class is two sessions and will be held virtually on Zoom. You will receive a link after you register. If you are new to Zoom, find out more here

Class size is limited to 20 participants. If class fills up quickly and you miss this opportunity, we hope to offer more classes like this in the future. Please contact customerservice@aksalmonsisters.com to be put on a waitlist and we will reach out to you when we have another class scheduled.

By registering for this class and paying the class fee you will be able to access this virtual class by Zoom on Thursday, April 15th and April 27th. Please be sure that you can make it to both classes at the scheduled time. You will be contacted directly by Salmon Sisters with a confirmation email by March 25th and by Instructor Janey Chang by email a few days prior to the first class. In the meantime, start gathering your supplies:

Supplies needed:

1. ONE fish skin (from at least a fillet of fish). Salmon, halibut, cod, etc. We will only have time to work with the equivalent of one fish skin during class. Take care when skinning to keep in one piece with no holes. Store bought fish works just fine! Some flesh on is just fine, no need to remove the scales, and be sure to freeze in a Ziploc bag until our class. Keep it away from warm water and temperatures! Salmon Sisters is currently offering a seasonal special on our boxes of Wild Alaska Sockeye Salmon, which ship quickly to your door and can be used for many delicious meals as well as for class. Get your order in as soon as your register to ensure timely delivery.

2. Something to scrape with: a tablespoon, seashells with smooth edges, mason jar lid

3. Dish soap

4. Bowls for washing and rinsing

5. Rag, hand towel or apron

6. Paint scraper or old debit card

7. Cutting board

8. Oil (coconut, bacon fat, margarine, etc.)

9. Black tea...a box of Tetley, Red Rose, or any other old black tea you have lurking around.

10. Quart sized jar or equivalent (for tanning solution)

Salmon Sisters donates 1% of all proceeds to the Give Fish Project, which gives wild Alaska seafood to the Food Bank of Alaska. Thanks for helping us give fish with your order!

Salmon Sisters honors returns and exchanges for unworn, unwashed, or defective items purchased within 30 days. Markdowns, frozen seafood, and products marked as “final sale” are not returnable. Learn more about initiating a return or exchange on our Frequently Asked Questions page.
