Peatlands, also known as fens, bogs and muskeg, are special wetlands with deep, carbon-rich, saturated soil called peat. Though peatlands only cover 3% of Earth's surface, they store more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem - twice that of all the world's forests combined!
Peatland habitats are high in biodiversity and help mitigate the effects of climate change by recharging aquifers and reducing the severity of wildfires and flood events. They provide critical habitat for baby salmon and remove harmful toxins from groundwater before it enters our streams, lakes, and oceans.
Supported by the Homer Drawdown: Peatland Project and on permanent public display at the Homer Airport, this artwork celebrates the value of intact peatlands and promotes the stewardship of these treasured habitat.
50% of artist profits from this limited edition go directly towards peatland protection through the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust in Homer, Alaska.
