Salmon Stewardship
Giving Back to the Source
At Salmon Sisters, our livelihood depends on the wild fish we harvest from Alaska's waters, alongside our community of commercial fishermen. We understand that for salmon to thrive—starting as healthy babies, growing strong in our rivers, venturing into the ocean, and returning home to spawn—they need healthy habitats to support them through their earliest stages of life. The health of salmon, the namesake of our company, is crucial to our livelihood and to the well-being of Alaska, as it is to countless others in our state.
That’s why we’re proud to partner with the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust (KHLT), a local non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the critical land that salmon rely on. KHLT’s work safeguards the natural heritage of the Kenai Peninsula for future generations. Through our special edition Wild Salmon Forever Hoodies and sales in our brick-and-mortar shops on Alaska Wild Salmon Day, Salmon Sisters donates a portion of proceeds to KHLT’s efforts in salmon habitat preservation.
We are committed to learning how we can engage in stewardship of our local watershed and educating visitors who come through our shops about the connection between healthy coastal ecosystems and thriving salmon populations—the very heart of our business.
In 2018, we were among the first participants in KHLT’s Fish Need Land Too field trips. This past summer, we took our entire team into the field to deepen our understanding of land stewardship and how we can help protect the habitats that sustain salmon. You can read more about this experience in our blog post, "Fish Need Land Too: A Collaborative Journey Into Salmon Conservation."
KHLT works closely with willing landowners to protect land with vital conservation value, monitors these lands over time, and offers educational programs to engage the community. By protecting these critical habitats, KHLT helps ensure the preservation of irreplaceable fish and wildlife habitats, as well as recreational lands, for generations to come. Since its founding 35 years ago, the Land Trust has successfully protected nearly 4,000 acres on the Kenai Peninsula.
We’re honored to support KHLT in this important mission. Thank you for helping us protect salmon habitat for future generations! You can donate directly to KHLT by visiting their webpage.
