Herring Notebook
5.5x8.5 inch notebook with full color artwork on front and back designed from original cut-paper artwork by Alaskan artist Valisa Higman. Each notebook has a printed artist bio page and has 50 pages inside with twin wire loop binging. All left hand pages are unlined pages, and right hand pages are lined making it ideal for people who want to sketch and write.
"My hometown, Seldovia was named for herring, which used to be abundant in the bay. Their population is slowly recovering, and I love seeing their silvery schools in the harbor and slough. My cut-paper artwork all starts as a sheet of black paper. Carving away at the background using an Xacto knife, the images are revealed in an intricate lacework of lines. Using the black as my foreground, I fill the negative space by piecing together layers of paper in vibrant colors and textures. As a finishing touch, I add the last details and shading with paint. My work reflects my love of community, nature and all things nostalgic."
