We grew up working on the water in Xtratuf Boots. Xtratufs are iconic to our commercial fishing community – a boot that defines Alaskans’ shared understanding of hard work and adventure, worn with pride on and off the water.
We've seen women across Alaska and beyond wearing Salmon Sisters XTRATUF Boots these past few years. We love the way we've seen them worn for all types of activities – fishing, gardening, dog walking, tide-pooling on the beach, dressed up for dinner and dancing, paired with favorite wool socks in deep winter snow. We love seeing them rolled down to show off our prints inside – jellyfish, whales, octopus and other beautiful ocean creatures. Our collaboration with Xtratuf has introduced us to a greater community of inspiring women who love the sea, and we're so thankful to all of you who have purchased boots through our webshop and at our flagship stores in Alaska. Your generosity has helped us donate over 100,000 cans of salmon to the Food Bank of Alaska through our Give Fish Project this year!
We're excited to show you what's next. We have loved collaborating with Xtratuf Boots to design the new 2019 Salmon Sisters Collection, for women who work hard and play hard in wild places and in wild weather.
The 2019 Salmon Sisters Xtratuf Boot Collection includes eight new styles, including 15” Legacy and Ankle Deck Boots, as well as more casual deck shoes and slip-on shoes. We designed two new prints for this year’s styles, and are continuing to use the original fan favorite Octopus design.
The first new print is a Sea Greens design – it celebrates the aquatic plants that are consumed by subsistence users and have cultural importance in coastal Alaska. Seaweed keeps the ocean healthy by providing habitat for marine animals and storing carbon dioxide, the leading cause of ocean acidification. We love making pickles out of seaweed, and use it as fertilizer in our garden.
The second new print is a design covered in all five species of salmon that we catch in Alaska, as well as Steelhead and Rainbow trout. These fish are beloved to sport fishermen, commercial fishermen, subsistence fishermen, biologists, coastal residents, and seafood lovers. Our lives, like so many Alaskan lives, revolve around the seasonal movement and life cycle of these fish. We think about them all the time, especially when we’re wearing out Xtratuf Boots during the fishing season. We figured it was time that all the other fish-loving ladies out there had a pair of lucky boots like these!
