Tom Crestodina is an Alaska fisherman who began making cutaway drawings in 2011 to connect with his young son Franio while he was at sea.

"When I went back to fishing for the first time after my son was born, I missed my family so much it was like physical pain. Any father who has been to sea knows that feeling. Making these drawings was my way of dealing with it, and reaching out to my little boy."

Alaska Marine Highway Ship:

This is a drawing of the interior of the lovely M/V Malaspina. It was built in 1963 as one of the first Alaska marine highway ships connecting together the Island and coastal communities of Alaska and providing passenger and vehicle links to the lower 48 states through the Ferry terminal in Bellingham, Washington.

There are over fifty people of all ages included in this drawing, including passengers, deck crew, stewards, pursers, helmspeople, officers, and a few of their dogs. There are also numerous vehicles loaded with cargo as the people going to and from remote places bring supplies, toys, and freight with them.

In the background is the Fairweather Range near Yakutat, Alaska.

There will be 500 signed and numbered prints in this limited edition.

Cannery Dock:

This piece shows a gillnetter selling his fish at the cannery or cold storage, where the dock workers hoist the fish up in the brailer bags from the fish hold.

The dock, like many old Alaska docks, has lots of old piping and other forgotten stuff underneath, and the pilings are covered with barnacles and mussels.

Sockeye Set in the Bay:

A salmon gillnetter is hauling in a nice set in Bristol Bay.

The Bristol Bay fishery is among the world's most robust and best managed, and it sustainably produces tens of millions of his-value sockeye salmon, which are treasured for their rich flavor and bright red color.

Vessels fishing in the bay use light gillnets, which they set drifting and blocking one another in one of the wildest competitive fisheries in the world. The crews work hard skating the fish loose from the gill net as fast as they can so that the net can be set again.

Seiner No. 5:

This is a classic steel salmon seiner hauling aboard a pretty nice set of fish in Alaska. Here you can see the boats below deck spaces and the fish being spilled onto the deck from the end of the seine net cascading down into the fish hold where they will be refrigerated in water.

The captain is controlling the rigging and winches with hydraulic valves at the back of the house while a crew member pulls the hatch cover to let the fish go down.

This is the fifth seiner in my seiner series, and contains a dedication to Henry Crestodina, who was born May 22, 2015.
