2016 Salmon Sisters Holiday Gift Guide

This year we're celebrating products made by local Alaskans, and products we love to use while fishing, adventuring, or in our homes, with our Holiday Gift Guide. We hope you support local and gift well this holiday season!

On the first 12 days of December, we're giving away one of each item on our gift guide to a random customer who places an order on that day.  To enter our daily random drawings, all you have to do is place an order through the Salmon Sisters webshop and sign up for our newsletter for an extra chance to win! Each winner will be contacted by email the day after each giveaway runs, and their names will be added to this blog post so people can check back. DEC 1. Comestible Journal's Women Farmer Cards

In honor and support of the female farming community, The Female Farmer Project and Anna Brones have teamed up for a limited edition set of greeting card series. 50% of the proceeds of this greeting card series goes to supporting women farmers, through the work of micro-loan organization Kiva and US-based Women Food & Ag Network. Inspired by Audra Mulkern’s photographs and her subjects for The Female Farmer Project, each greeting card features a papercut illustration by Anna Brones. Each set of four cards comes with four envelopes. The 5x7" greeting cards are printed on 100 lb cover Desert Storm Neenah Environment paper, FSC certified and 30% post consumer. The cards are printed in Seattle, Washington by women-owned printing company Girlie Press. WINNER: Lynsey J.

DEC 2. Jens Klaar Upswept Tip Caribou Knife

Jens and Leslie Klaar, owners of High Tide Arts, opened their first seasonal gallery located on the Homer Spit, Alaska in 1999. They sell their own artwork, jewelry, custom knives and carry artwork by other Alaskan artists including clothing, embossed prints, photography, soapstone and metal work. This Caribou antler hilt with 440c stainless blade comes with a custom leather sheath with belt loop. Its length from beginning hilt to blade tip is 7.2 inches. Jens gathers Caribou antlers in the Alaskan Brooks Range to use for his beautiful, handcrafted knives. WINNER: Raven M. 

DEC 3. Trickster Company Square Raven Scarf

Trickster Company promotes innovative indigenous design. They explore themes and issues in Native culture, striving to represent a prestigious lineage of art in fresh and energetic ways as a celebration of Northwest Coast culture as it lives today. Trickster Company was founded by Rico Lanáat’ Worl, a Tlingit/Athabascan formline designer. His work explores living with traditional values today. He also is an active advocate of diversity in community and works to promote diversity in civic engagement. This vibrant silk scarf was designed by Crystal Worl and is 26" by 26”. WINNER: Kelly H.

DEC 4. Drifter’s Fish Smoked Copper River Sockeye Salmon

6.5 ounces of heavenly smoked Sockeye Salmon, caught by Nelly and Michael Hand aboard the FV Pelican in Copper River. The most beautiful reusable jars, with the most delicious wild protein inside. Nelly and Michael own Drifters Fish, selling wild-caught Alaskan seafood they catch in the summers, and living in Guemes Island, Washington in the winters. WINNER: Melissa Q. 

DEC 5. The Scow Seiner Print

This is a cutaway drawing of a Northwest seine boat on a sunny day, skiff on the deck, heading in exactly the opposite direction as the salmon! The cutaway shows the empty fish hold, engine room with clothes drying, the refrigeration plumbing, the bunks in the fo'c'sle, and the lazaret with lots of fun details. It was made during the summer seine season of 2013 by fisherman Tom Crestodina. This print is from a limited edition batch of 350, each numbered individually and signed by the artist. This print measures about 10" by 13" with an additional 1" border. WINNER: Michaela T.
