2024 was Salmon Sisters' twelfth year in business! This year was sweet and solid, with an incredible team, a big summer season in Homer, many seafood meals shared, family time on the water, some exciting new design projects and growing our business's roots in Homer. It was amazing to welcome people to our beautiful hometown and share what we love about Alaska's seafood industry, local arts and natural surroundings.
We respectfully acknowledge the land of the Dena’ina and Sugpiaq People, on which we live and work in Homer, Alaska.
On a more sobering note, working on the water hold many dangers, and our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones to the sea this year in our community, including the captain and crew of the F/V Wind Walker, Clayton Hoy of the F/V Warmaster, and others. Fair winds and following seas to these fishermen and their families.
Products We Launched
What an honor it has been to continue on the journey of designing artwork for folks who wear Xtratuf boots! The top of our favorite products of the year are the new Halibut Legacy and Deck Boot, a new green colorway of our classic Octopus Legacy Boot, and our very first men's Walrus Deck Boot! We treasure seeing you all wearing these boots out on the boat fishing, romping around Alaska and beyond. We love dreaming up new designs for your outdoor lifestyle, inspired by the sea.
In 2024 we moved our frozen Wild Fish Box fulfillment from Oregon to our warehouse in Homer, Alaska! We are super proud to be shipping 100% traceable wild Alaska salmon from our local waters of majestic Cook Inlet. We love supporting the local economy that support Salmon Sisters, sourcing fish and supporting livelihoods of fishermen and processing workers in our community. We also love sending fish to our customers that comes from the beautiful wild waters we love; and knowing exactly what boats the fish comes from and the fishermen who caught it. We remind ourselves daily how lucky we are to live and work in a place where wild salmon swim free and are so happy we get to share boxes of this abundance with you! Read more about it here.
Notable Press
Our recently-published cookbook, "The Salmon Sisters: Harvest & Heritage" was honored in some amazing press, including Smithsonian Magazine's "Ten Best Books About Food" and was a 2024 IACP Nominee for Best American Cookbook!
The New York Times Wirecutter included our customer-favorite Smoked Tinned Salmon in their roundup of "The Best Tinned Fish!"
Salmon Sisters Shops
We had a big, exciting summer season in Homer, Alaska at the Salmon Sisters shops! The Fish Shop, Flagship and Mug Up Coffee Shop were bustling with travelers from all across the country (and world!) who came to spend time in nature, get out on the water, go fishing, and learn what Salmon Sisters has to offer. We love being stewards for our home on Kachemak Bay, welcoming folks into our shops, and sharing what we love about Alaska's seafood industry and wild places.
Our warehouse, where our Fish Shop, Mug Up Coffee Shop are located, also hosted our friends Johnny's Corner and the Kachemak Kelp Hub for the 3rd season. So fun to share a space with innovative people, mariculture, and delicious seafood! We celebrated the summer season together with a beautiful dinner outside in the kelp-drying greenhouse, with sugar kelp-wrapped halibut and other delicious seafood.
We hosted local Alaska artists and makers for weekend pop-ups throughout the summer, something we're excited to continue in the new year.
Salmon Team Spirit
We love our small team so much and this summer we got out together on a collaborative journey in salmon conservation on the Kenai Peninsula! The field trip was hosted by Kachemak Heritage Land Trust (KHLT) and Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (KBNERR), and expanded on our ongoing quest to be stewards of salmon in our local area. It was eye-opening to see baby salmon living in the steams all around us and exciting to learn more about how we can help protect their habitat.
Giving Back
In 2024, we wrapped up ten years of philanthropic efforts with the Give Fish Project, donating wild salmon to the Food Bank of Alaska, and pointed our compass towards a new initiative of equal importance to us: supporting efforts to help protect wild salmon habitat in Alaska. We donated a portion of our proceeds from our special Wild Salmon Forever Hoodies and our retail sales from Alaska Wild Salmon Day to Kachemak Heritage Land Trust to support their efforts in protecting wild salmon habitat on the Kenai Peninsula.
Cooking Wild Alaska Seafood
We had the pleasure of teaching several cooking classes this year, including one for Christopher Kimball's Online Milk Street Cooking School! We made winter comfort foods, including Smoked Tinned Salmon Carbonara and a Fancy Crab Mac & Cheese from "The Salmon Sisters: Harvest & Heritage." So fun to meet cooks across the country interested in eating like an Alaskan!
We were also honored to join the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute at the Tutka Bay Lodge, where a group of international chefs gathered to cook Wild Alaska Seafood. It was inspiring to taste our own staple ingredients in new and exciting dishes from around the world.
